During regular hours, people commonly start with a clinic or general hospital. Outside regular hours, the available route varies by region and facility. Check the opening hours, department, address, appointment rules, language support, payment methods, and any referral requirement. JNTO also recommends contacting a medical institution before visiting when possible because services and language support can differ.

• Write down the exact name, address, phone number, and opening hours you plan to use.
• Ask whether the first visit requires an appointment or a referral letter.
• Check what insurance or identity document the facility accepts and how payment works.

At reception, say whether this is your first visit and ask where to complete the form. Ask for a general cost estimate if that would help you prepare. After the consultation, payment is usually made at the medical institution; medicine may be dispensed and paid for separately at a pharmacy, depending on the arrangement.

Before leaving, confirm any written instructions, the next contact route, and whether you need to bring anything to a future visit. Keep the facility’s official contact details because hours and procedures can change.
