“Clinic” usually describes a smaller outpatient medical institution. “Hospital” can describe an institution with a wider range of departments, equipment, inpatient care, or emergency functions. These are broad categories, not a quality ranking. The right route depends on the time, the service you need, and the facility’s own rules.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare describes referral-focused hospitals as institutions that emphasize visits with a referral letter from a regular doctor or another medical institution. A visit without a referral may still be possible, but a separate “special fee” may generally apply. Confirm the current rule with the institution before visiting.
